18th Century Cretan Embroidery
Size: 23 x 95cm
Date (circa): 18th century

Greek embroidery is a passion of mine for some years now. Great ones are hard to find but every now and then one pops up, like this lively example of Cretan work. Fabulous multi-coloured silks depict flora and fauna on cotton ground. This fragment was most likely from the border of a bed sheet, although it could also have been part of a valence, the decorated flaps hanging on the bridal bed. Very charming embroidery full of quirks and details to thrill the eye. Some of the birds appear to be carrying twigs- nest building?- while others have cornucopias issuing from their beaks. Beautiful.
