Cretan Skirt Panel
Size: 3'8" x 1'6" / 111 x 45cm
Date (circa): 1800

Cretan skirt panel. This is the bottom edge of a ladies dress, meant to be worn during ceremonies. Complete dresses are almost unheard of, although there is one in the Benaki museum in Athens. They all use a similar template of vases issuing flowers at regular intervals with a varying degree of birds and animals in between. Here you can see the double-headed eagle in the border and each vase is flanked by multiple pairs of birds and even one set that might represent dragons. Exquisite needle work of silk upon cotton, great for hanging and a constant joy to look at. Undervalued 200 year old art.
